Christian baptism is a voluntary ceremony
whereby a person publicly declares
he has come to a saving faith in Jesus Christ.
Christian baptism is performed under the authority of a New Testament Church
by dipping the believer under water and lifting him up again,
representing the death, burial, and resurrection.
Paul explained this in Romans 6.
- 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
- 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:
- that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father,
- even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Baptism does not save;
it is not required for salvation.
Christian baptism is an act of obedience,
and is required for membership in the Church
As Jesus was baptized in obedience (Matthew 3:15),
so we should be as well.
It is also part of the great commission—
- 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations,
- baptizing them in the name of the Father,
- and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
- 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:
- and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Publicly confessing one's faith,
whether by word Romans 10:9-10 or action Acts 2:38
while not required for salvation,
is a way of acknowledging the Father and a sign of a saving faith
Matthew 10:32-33
The biblical requirements for baptism are simple:
have a saving relationship with Jesus Christ,
and understand what baptism means.
The Bible adds no requirements for age,
or the length of time someone has been a believer Acts 8:34-38
- 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still:
- and they went down both into the water,
- both Philip and the eunuch;
- and he baptized him.
