Psalm 24.1-5

This text is a portion of one of the Hebrew songs of praise.

It reminds us that the earth belongs to the Lord.

He is the Creator, the Sustainer, and the Sovereign.

These truths should challenge us.

I. HIS PROPERTY

A. This planet belongs to the Lord, not to man.

B. It did not have its origin in some cosmic explosion,

but was brought into existence by the word of the Lord.

C. He put man here to dress it and to keep it,

but it is still God's.

D. We should be good stewards of what has been entrusted to our care.

E. Not only is the earth His, but its fullness is His as well.

F. We must be careful not to try and keep what belongs to Him.

G. Remember the blessed farmer in Luke 12.16-21

"…The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
And he thought within himself, saying,
What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
And he said, This will I do:
I will pull down my barns, and build greater;
and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
And I will say to my soul,
Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years;
take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

But God said unto him,

Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee:

then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

So is he that layeth up treasure for himself,

and is not rich toward God.”

II. HIS PRAISE

A. The angels praise Him.

Isaiah 6

3 "And one cried unto another, and said,
Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts:
the whole earth is full of his glory."

B. We should take time to recognize the work of His hands.

Psalm 19

1 "The heavens declare the glory of God;
and the firmament sheweth his handywork."

C. We ought to "stop and smell the roses" for they are the work of His hands.

D. All of creation cries out to praise Him.

Matthew 21

16 "…And Jesus saith unto them,
Yea; have ye never read,
Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?"

E. He said that even the rocks would praise Him.

Luke 19

40 "And he answered and said unto them,
I tell you that, if these should hold their peace,
the stones would immediately cry out."

F. He is worthy of praise.

G. Every tongue will one day praise Him.

Philippians 2

10”That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth."

III. HIS PROVISION

A. He made the earth, He made man, and He has made the way for man to get to heaven.

B. Man will never attain to His perfect standard.

Psalm 24.4

“He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart;
who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.”

C. The way to God is through His provision, Jesus Christ.

John 10

10 "… I am come that they might have life,
and that they might have it more abundantly."

D. Those who trust Him receive His blessing and His righteousness.

If you have not trusted Him,

do it before it is too late.

The earth can be a dreadful place if we are not prepared to meet its owner.
