Tithes are taken.
Offerings are given.
Although tithing was practiced extensively in the Old Testament,
it was never practiced or taught within the first-century Church.
Instead the New Testament scriptures teach the concept of "freewill offerings"
as a means of supporting the church:
1 Corinthians 16.2 - - - 2 Corinthians 9.7
Every man according as he purposeth in his heart,
so let him give;
not grudgingly, or of necessity:
for God loveth a cheerful giver.
Assume that you are a scribe or Pharisee
and read this as if Jesus is talking to you.
- 23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees,
- hypocrites!
- and have omitted the weightier matters of the law,
- judgment, mercy, and faith:
- these ought ye to have done,
- 42 But woe unto you, Pharisees!
- for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs,
- and pass over judgment and the love of God:
- these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
- 12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
- 5 And verily they that are of the sons of Levi,
- who receive the office of the priesthood,
- have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law,
- that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:
- 6 But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham,
- and blessed him that had the promises.
- 8 And here men that die receive tithes;
- but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.
